In his sculptures, installations, drawings and videos, Marc Swanson explores overt conceptual and material dualities, such as urban and rural, masculine and feminine, and the personal and mythic. Putting the issues of camp, nostalgia and sentimentality at the forefront of his practice, he synthesizes these supposedly oppositional relationships to challenge conventional definitions and hierarchies. Swanson’s recent exhibitions include shows at Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Saint Louis Art Museum, Walker Art Center, Saatchi Gallery, Seattle Art Museum, and the Museum of Arts and Design.

Marc Swanson, Untitled (White Corner), 2011, wood, mirror, paint, stain, fabric, plaster, and photograph, 82” x 40” x 28”.

Founded by artists in 1928, SculptureCenter is a not-for-profit arts institution located in Long Island City, NY. We commission new work and present exhibits by emerging and established artists from New York and around the world. Our Tumblr site focuses on emerging artists and work that offers new ways of considering sculpture, or furthers the understanding of the discipline and how it can intersect with other mediums. Content is selected by SculptureCenter’s curatorial staff and guest curators.
