RECOMMENDED: Joseph Montgomery’s Velveteen, on view at Laurel Gitlen (261 Broome St) through February 19, 2012. Often compared to Kurt Schwitters’ assemblages, Montgomery’s constructed wall reliefs are comprised of materials such as clay, canvas, oil, sheet metal, paper, and plastic. Newer developments in the artist’s practice include large cedar shim sculptures measuring almost ten feet, and smaller, painted shim compositions that form interlocking wedges. Overall, the show reflects a cohesion of disparate works that are linked through an emphasis on texture and form. Montgomery is a graduate of Hunter College’s MFA program, currently based in New York.
